I was going through some old photos and happened upon this selfie from a 2012 trip to Los Angeles. I love the murals that pay tribute to the city’s rich cinematic history, peppering Hollywood Boulevard like an old queen’s paint by numbers set. Even the metal security gates that are pulled down at night are likely to have a movie star painted on them, and why shouldn’t they? One of these murals is usually worse than the next; I have been known to snap a selfie or two as I traverse the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
I found this particular shot perplexing as I simply cannot for the life of me identify several of the subjects. Now I clearly see in my Romper Room mirror Gwyneth Paltrow clutching her (undeserved Oscar). I also see Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nicole Kidman, and Sandra Bullock. But who the heck are the couple next to Gwyneth? I thought maybe the woman was Jennifer Garner, but even though I like her, I don’t think she’s really at the mural level yet. The man next to her? Your guess is as good as mine. To me it mostly looks like Tony Randall. I welcome your suggestions as this is precisely the kind of unanswered question that my homo-Aspergers will make me obsess over.
